National Army Museum
Mount-making | Project management
Following a 3-year, £23.75 million redevelopment transforming its Chelsea site, the National Army Museum reopened to the public. The intention of the redesign was to encourage greater understanding of the British Army’s relevance and interactions within society through new, thought-provoking displays.
While construction was still in progress, and harnessing the technical and artistic skills of a specialist mount-making team from Museum Workshop, we project-managed and completed our part in the major installation of over 2,500 mounted objects for the museum, including a section of the Berlin Wall. The work allowed two thirds of the museum’s collection to be displayed for the first time, across five new permanent thematic galleries - Soldier, Army, Battle, Insight and Society.
The complexities of the project delivery were huge in that we had to carry out the design, fabrication and installation of the object display mounts in the midst of the on-going refurbishment and fit-out of the building that had to achieve a fixed mid-March opening date by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, despite being beset by construction delay.
